Giles Duffy Counselling

Psychotherapeutic Counsellor based in Hove

Hello!  Thank you for coming to look at my webpage.  I am a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor based in Hove, and I provide support for a variety of issues.  My work is primarily informed by my training in a form of therapy called Transactional Analysis but I am also influenced by existential and relational approaches.

You might want to talk about relationship problems, or be unhappy at work.  You could be having problems with your creative life or struggling with feeling different.  Some people have very specific reasons for seeking therapy and some might simply be aware that they are not very happy and want to find out why.

I’m keen to work with all of these issues and more.  Therapy begins with a safe space where people can explore their thoughts and feelings confidentially.  This is my starting point.

If you are interested in seeing a counsellor and would like to discuss what it involves I am happy to hold an initial session at no obligation so that you can make an informed decision.

About Me

Giles grew up in Slough before attending University of Sussex to study philosophy before dropping out and spending some years touring and recording with his band.  When this project disbanded he returned to Sussex and completed his degree.  After some time working for Brighton Council he joined the Civil Service, working for The Charity Commission and latterly The Pensions Regulator.  Always fascinated by therapy he was drawn to study Transactional Analysis, one of many approaches to therapy.  Having qualified he is now working as a private practitioner.

Therapy can be many things.  It can bring up strong feelings, it can feel exciting, sometimes scary and sometimes even funny.  My aim is to create a safe and comfortable space in which you can explore the issues you bring.  This space is confidential and the direction we take is led by you, the client.

My peers have described me as warm, pragmatic and empathetic.  Whilst I am informed by the modality of Transactional Analysis, and have found that this framework is highly effective, I strongly feel that I am fundamentally a human meeting another human.  The foundation of my work with clients is my non judgemental and respectful relationship with them.  I think that my work with clients is exciting, uplifting and fascinating.

I offer face to face sessions and can work online.  Sessions last 50 minutes.

I work with a wide variety of clients but I have some specialities:

Men

As men we are certainly in the minority providing therapy and I suspect in the minority in seeking it out. I am acutely aware that men are conditioned to maintain that everything is okay even if they are struggling inside. Struggles with relationships, parenting, our role in society and admitting our vulnerabilities are very real and not often discussed between us. I feel strongly that addressing these issues with my clients is important and can lead to positive change

Music and the arts

I have extensive experience in creative and performing environments in a professional and semi professional capacity.  As a result I have insight into the very particular issues which arise for people in the creative industries

Neurodiversity

My experience with neurodiverse clients has been rewarding and exciting. I feel that my way of working can be especially helpful for some neurodiverse people.  I recognise and understand the challenges that neurodiversity brings but also that those dealing with this are a varied, creative and insightful group who stand to make great gains from therapy.

The tradition I work in is called Transactional Analysis (TA) It is an approach which uses easily understandable terms and concepts. It seeks to help clients to break free from old patterns of thinking and develop more autonomy. I find this approach exciting and rewarding and am passionate about working with my clients.

Other issues I have worked with are

  • Abuse

  • Depression

  • Neurodivergence

  • Bereavement

  • Trauma

  • Sexuality

  • Social Anxiety

  • Health issues

  • Self confidence

  • Relationship issues

My fees are

£60 face to face

£50 online
